Wine Glasses, Make Mine a Large

Don't spoil your latest wine discovery by pouring wine into a small-sized glass, you'll miss all the amazing aromas wine has to offer. The shape of the glass, namely its curvature, determines where the wine lands in your mouth, affecting your taste buds accordingly.
There are glass manufacturers who have built up worldwide reputations on the theory that the shape of the glass affects the aroma as well as the taste of the wine. They have glasses that correspond to the particular flavor components of a grape variety as well as glasses shaped for a particular grape variety from a certain region.
At the most basic level, stick with two types of wine glasses, ideally both with tulip-shaped bowls and long, slender stems. Think big ones for reds and not quite as big for whites. As far as reds are concerned, the bigger the better. Reds, especially mature ones, need more space to breathe to release the fruity aromas. Fill the glass only a third of the way full for both whites and reds.
Avoid any chunky rims as well, this definitly detracts from the overall enjoyment of the wine. The thinner the better. Colored-stemware should also be avoided as it distorts the appearance of the wine.
As far as caring for your glasses, do not store them upside down as it traps stale air, which can taint a delicate wine. Even the slightest trace of detergent can affect the taste of a wine, use only hot water when cleaning them.
Lots of people ask me what glasses allow me to enjoy wine the best. I have to admit I love my sets from the Riedel Sommelier Series the best. The long stems and especially the thin rims of these handmade, mouth-blown, crystal glasses are in my opinion...perfection.
